HAIR BRAIDING STYLES
Hair Braiding Styles - Top 5 Mistakes
to Avoid
By Katy Y
Taylor
Ever wonder why some hair braiding styles look less than
gorgeous? Perhaps it's because the wearer is making some easily
avoidable mistakes that prevents the style from looking its
best. Check out the following mistakes and see if you might be
making them in your own hair care program.
Mistake #1: Excessive Blow Drying
Remember that hair is sensitive and is prone to damage if
you don't treat it with care. The heat from blow drying can
destroy the hair's integrity with excessive use. So a good rule
of thumb is to only blow dry when necessary. When you do use a
blow dryer, use a nozzle to diffuse the heat. If you don't, you
risk getting the hair too close to the heat coils, which can
scorch the hair.
Mistake #2: Using Two-in-One Hair Care Products
On the surface, it sounds like a good idea to use a shampoo
that has a conditioner included. Unfortunately, these products
can be harsh on the hair and lead it to become dry and tangled.
Instead, it is better to use a separate shampoo and conditioner
that complement each other. The best hair products to use for
hair braiding styles are those that contain Panthenol, which
helps to strengthen the hair shaft.
Mistake #3: Shampooing your Hair Too Often
If you wash your hair too often, you strip it of its natural
oils, which can lead to dryness, frizz, and over time,
breakage. Instead, shampooing every 1-2 weeks should be
sufficient. You can also freshen up your scalp between shampoos
by moistening a cotton ball with an astringent like Witch
Hazel. This will also help soothe any scalp itching that
occurs.
Mistake #4: Going to Bed with Wet Hair
Ensure that your braids are dry completely before you go to
bed. If you don't, you will likely wake up with hair tangles
that can be hard to get out. In addition, damp hair increases
the risk of bacterial buildup and mildew. A related issue is
going to bed with your hair uncovered. Be sure to cover your
hair with a silk scarf or bonnet to protect your hair against
the friction of rubbing against the sheets.
Mistake #5: Using Harsh Hair Coloring Products
When you dye your hair with harsh hair coloring products,
the hair tends to take on a straw-like appearance and becomes
more susceptible to breakage. Instead, if you want to try a new
color, then look for products that are made with natural hair
colorants, such as chamomile, henna, and black malva
flowers.
So examine your hair care routine and be sure that you are
not making these mistakes. If you are, then make the
appropriate adjustments and the rewards of healthy, shining
hair braiding styles can be yours.
